Southwest Laboratoy purchases EPEAT-registered Computers, Displays, and Imaging Equipment

All electronics must include a Green Purchasing Determination and Justification form. This form is a checklist that reminds the purchaser to verify the Energy Star or EPEAT status. It also contains the websites where this information can be located. Please see the following excerpt from the form:

__ Energy Star energy-efficient electronics (See www.energystar.gov/products for list of qualified products)
__ FEMP Low Standby Power energy-efficient electronics (See https://oahu.lbl.gov for list of products meeting FEMP standards)
__ Environmentally Preferable Product (EPP), including EPEAT-certified computers/laptops
(See www.epa.gov/epp/ for guidance on EPP products; these are products for which no standard exists but which
are better for the environment than equivalent products) (See www.epeat.net/ for list of EPEAT-registered computers and laptops)

___ EPA recycled-content requirements have been met for this procurement action
___ Energy Star/Energy Efficient Product requirements have been met for this procurement action
___ Low Standby Power product requirements have been met for this procurement action
___ EPP (including EPEAT certified computer/laptop) have been met for this procurement action

Over their lifetime, compared to products that do not meet EPEAT criteria, the 20 EPEAT registered electronics purchased by DEA Southwest Laboratory in 2016 will result in environmental impact reductions including:

  • Reduce use of primary materials by 3.7 metric tons
  • Avoid the disposal of 22 kg of hazardous waste, equal to the weight of 11 bricks
  • Eliminate the equivalent of one U.S. household’s solid waste for three weeks—115 kg
  • Avoidance of 17 kg of water pollutant emissions

Energy-Related Savings
EPEAT’s requirement that registered products meet the latest ENERGY STAR specifications means these products will consume less energy throughout their useful life, resulting in:

  • Savings of 10,640 kWh of electricity—enough to power one U.S. home for 10 months
  • Reduction of 1.8 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions— equivalent to taking 1 average U.S. passenger car off the road for a year
  • $1,098 in lifetime cost savings
