2017 EPEAT Purchaser Award – 2 Stars

Peter Pohlot

Brookhaven National Laboratory purchases EPEAT registered computers, displays, and imaging equipment.

Over their lifetime, compared to products that do not meet EPEAT criteria, the 716 EPEAT registered electronics purchased by Brookhaven National Laboratory in 2016 will result in environmental impact reductions including:

  • Reduce use of primary materials by 64.8 metric tons, equivalent to the weight of 2 tractor-trailer 18-wheelers
  • Avoid the disposal of 474 kg of hazardous waste, equal to the weight of 4 refrigerators
  • Eliminate the equivalent of 1 U.S. household’s solid waste for a year—1.7 metric tons
  • Avoidance of 271 kg of water pollutant emissions

Energy-Related Savings
EPEAT’s requirement that registered products meet, and often exceed, the latest ENERGY STAR specifications means these products will consume less energy throughout their useful life, resulting in:

  • Savings of 182,000 kWh of electricity—enough to power 14 U.S. homes for a year
  • Reduction of 31.8 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions— equivalent to taking 23 average U.S. passenger cars off the road for a year
  • $18,700 in lifetime cost savings
