EPEAT Benefits

Over their lifetime, compared to products that do not meet EPEAT criteria, the 2,842 EPEAT-registered IT products purchased by Battelle Energy Alliance in 2018 will result in environmental impact reductions including:

  • Reduce use of primary materials by 221 metric tons, equivalent to the weight of 42 elephants
  • Avoid the disposal of 2.2 metric tons of hazardous waste, equal to the weight of 18 refrigerators
  • Eliminate the equivalent of 4 U.S. households’ solid waste for a year—7.2 metric tons
  • Avoidance of 1.4 metric tons of water pollutant emissions

Energy-Related Savings
EPEAT’s requirement that registered products meet, and often exceed, the latest ENERGY STAR specifications means these products will consume less energy throughout their useful life, resulting in:

  • Savings of 745 MWh of electricity—enough to power 61.4 U.S. households for a year
  • Greenhouse gas emissions reduction of 452 metric tons of CO2 equivalents—equal to taking 97 average U.S. passenger cars off the road for a year
  • $76,874 in lifetime cost savings

Environmentally Preferable Purchasing for Electronic Products (July, 2006, DOE-AL 2007-08) When the Order requires electronic products, the Subcontractor will deliver Electronic Product Environmental Acquisition Tool (EPEAT) registered products for computers, laptops, and monitors and for other electronic equipment, as applicable. For other electronic products (i.e. printers, copiers, scanners, all-in one devices/fax
machines, or televisions) that do not have a standard developed for EPEAT registration, the Subcontractor will deliver environmentally preferable electronics that have either an eco-label or at least 2 additional environmental attributes in addition to energy efficiency (ENERGYSTAR R qualified products or products conforming to the Federal Energy Management Program, FEMP, requirements).
