Green Electronics Council Launches EPEAT Registry Mobile Phone Category
Mobile Phones from leading global brands are now available in the EPEAT online product Registry with additional devices being added later in the year.
PORTLAND, OR – July 31, 2017 – EPEAT, the leading global ecolabel for the IT sector, now covers mobile phones. Along with desktops, laptops, imaging equipment and televisions, EPEAT now provides institutional purchasers an easy way to identify and compare high-performance, more-sustainable mobile phones.
The mobile phones that meet the EPEAT criteria are featured online in the EPEAT Registry, starting today. At launch, the EPEAT Registry mobile phone category includes devices from leading global brands such as Apple, LG and Samsung. Additional devices, including from HP and other leading global brands, are expected to be available in EPEAT later in the year.
The need for sustainable mobile phones is more pressing than ever. In 2016 alone, 1.5 billion mobile phones were sold worldwide, three times the global shipments of mobile phones just five years ago. Use of mobile phones has become so ubiquitous that it has fundamentally altered modern communications, photography, and an enormous variety of other day-to-day activities. By choosing a sustainable mobile phone, purchasers are choosing to help alleviate e-waste, decrease the use of toxic substances, improve device packaging, avoid conflict minerals, support fair labor practices, and more.
“Global wireless operators are demanding sustainable mobile phones. Increasingly, institutional purchasers are including mobile services as part of their sustainable procurements, and one way for wireless carriers to distinguish their mobile services as sustainable is by offering sustainable mobile phones,” said Nancy Gillis, CEO of the Green Electronics Council. “IT companies have figured out that to be market leaders, their brands need to be beautiful, innovative and sustainable. EPEAT is therefore thrilled to highlight sustainable phones from Apple, LG, Samsung and other brands.”
Like all EPEAT product categories, the mobile phone category is comprised of criteria that address all stages of a product’s life cycle, from design and manufacture to use and end of life. The EPEAT mobile phone category criteria are based on the ANSI-accredited UL 110 Standard for Sustainability for Mobile Phones, a multi-attribute sustainability standard that evaluates a product’s compliance with stringent performance criteria throughout its life cycle. A new Ecologo/EPEAT joint-certification is being offered through Underwriters Laboratories (UL) for manufacturers that wish to leverage their mobile-phone certifications to ANSI/UL110 in the EPEAT continuous verification process.
The EPEAT program calculates the environmental and cost savings benefits for any institutional purchaser buying EPEAT-registered IT products. These benefit reports can be included in sustainability reporting initiatives such as the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI).
Institutional purchasers of EPEAT registered products are recognized at the annual EPEAT Purchaser Awards for the cost savings and environmental benefits associated with their procurement decisions. The 2017 EPEAT Purchaser Award winners realized combined cost savings of more than $33.8 million across the lifetime of their EPEAT-registered products in the PC and Display, Imaging Equipment, and TV categories. Along with significant cost savings for purchases in these categories, the 2017 EPEAT Purchaser Award winners also realized considerable environmental benefits including combined greenhouse gas reductions equivalent to removing more than 40,000 passenger cars from the road for a year; a reduction of nearly 769 metric tons of hazardous waste; solid waste savings equivalent to that produced by 2,078 average U.S. households each year; a reduction in energy usage by 327.5 million kilowatt hours; and avoidance of 513.8 metric tons of water pollutant emissions.
The Green Electronics Council, through EPEAT, is proud to offer sustainable mobile phones on its online EPEAT Registry as part of our mission to realize a world of only sustainable IT products.
